My av receiver is far away from my screen and I have purchased a 10 m HDMI lead and I do not get any picture at 1080p but the onscreen menu from the av receiver works. Why is this?

Not all cables are capable of sending 1080p at lengths over 7m without help.

One easy way of checking this is to try the signal at lower resolution 480p/576p/720p/1080i. If these are ok then try 1080p, if the picture goes then there could be two reasons:
The cable is not good enough (even though it might say 1080p on the packet) or the screen is drawing to much current from the cable and a booster will be needed to amplify the signal before the long run of cable.
