Using AVR with Media Center PCs

We have two things to think about - Picture & Sound.

Let's deal with the picture first:

So the first thing you have to do is get into the graphics card options and set the signal output on the PC. This must be a known industry spec (example 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p & 1080p24), if this is not done you will probably get "no picture". Some graphics cards have a check box that is called "Force HDTV", this will set one of the industry resolutions.

If you have a HDMI out, its a simple connection - also if you have DVI out: in this case, all you need is a DVI to HDMI converter.

The digital out (coaxial or optical) will send out the Dolby Digital or DTS signal, as long as the sound card supports this. Another option is via the HDMI.

With both of these options you must output the bitstream signal from the soundtrack. Otherwise you will not get Dolby Digital or DTS.

Alternatively, you could output PCM - this will typically give you 2 channel stereo only (except if multi channel PCM via HDMI is enabled - but this means audio processing is done by the PC instead of the AVR, which is not preferred).

Please verify these settings in the audio setup / sound menu of your PC.
